Located along the beach in Los Angeles County, Venice is world-famous for its beaches, Bohemian counter-culture residents an artists,
and canals in the residential area. Founded by Abbot Kinney (a tobacco millionaire) in 1905 as a beach resort town, it was originally
named Ocean Park before being renamed Venice in 1911, and was annexed to the city of los Angeles in 1925. Although popular as a resort
town in its early years, its popularity declined during the Depression and later years. Today, however, it again flourishes with tourists
coming to visit the beach, stroll along the Ocean Front Walk boardwalk, or explore artist galleries along Abbot Kinney Blvd.
Drawn to the Bohemian reputation of the area, many actors and entertainers have lived in Venice during its history. Notable past
residents included Jim Morrison (of The Doors), actor Robert Downey Jr., Arnold Schwarzenegger (who used to work out at nearby
Muscle Beach), and restaurant owner Wolfgang Puck. Several noted (and many hoping to be discovered) artists also make Venice their home,
creating a diverse range of art at the local galleries and along the beach.
