Founded in 1911 by a group of Danish-American settlers, the small village of Solvang (meaning "Sunny Field" in Danish) nestled between
the San Rafael and Santa Ynez Mountain ranges is like a page out of a Hans Christian Andersen story. Since its founding, the residents have maintained deep ties to their Danish roots and visitors from Denmark always comments on the authenticity of the town's architecture. Many shop keepers wear traditional clothing to further enhance the atmosphere.
The town is very compact and the bakeries, antique shops, and restaurants can easily be explored
by walking. The annual "Taste of Solvang" Food & Wine Festival encourages visitors to stroll from
shop to shop while tasting the various delicacies specially prepared by the local shop keepers
and restaurant owners. In fact, walking around is exactly what you need to do to burn
off all the calories from danishes, pastries, kringles, almond rings, aebleskiver
(pancake balls with powdered sugar and raspberry jam), and medisterpølse (Danish
sausage).
