California Travel Guide |
California is located on the western coast of the United States. The coastline runs along the Pacific Ocean from
the Mexican border in the south for nearly 1,930 km. (91,200 miles) to its northern border with the state of Oregon.
The state is approximately 300 km. (200 miles) wide from its western beaches to its eastern deserts bordering the
states of Nevada and Arizona.
The 3rd largest state in the U.S., it contains an incredibly diverse geography, including the highest (Mount Whitney: 4,418 meters,
14,495 feet) and lowest (Death Valley: -86 meters, -282 feet) points in the contiguous United States.
No other state has the rich variety that California has, which ranges from multi-ethnic cities filled with world-class
entertainment, theme parks, and museums, to vast protected nature parks with unrestricted opportunities for outdoor
recreation. California is commonly divided into 12 main regions: Los Angeles County, Orange County, Inland Empire,
Deserts, San Diego County, San Francisco Bay Area, High Sierra, Central Coast, Gold Country, Central Valley, North Coast,
and the Shasta Cascade.
Transportation
California, especially Southern California, is definitely a car culture, with thousands of miles of highways (called "freeways"). Most locals often refer to the major freeways by their names instead of the highway number. To make matters even more confusing, the same highway can have different names depending on it's location. For example, Hwy. 5 is known as the "San Diego Fwy." between San Diego Orange County, then becomes the "Santa Ana Fwy." to Los Angeles, the "Golden State Hwy." until Bakersfield, and then the "Westside Fwy." through most of the Central Valley region. Similarly, Highway 110 is the "Pasadena Fwy." between Pasadena and Los Angeles, but the"Harbor Fwy." from L.A. to Long Beach. Even more confusing is Hwy. 101, which is the "Ventura Fwy." through much of Southern California, but becomes the "Hollywood Fwy." in Universal City, and California State Route 134 takes over the "Ventura Fwy." name to Pasadena!
